Ross Chisholm
Parliament, 2014
Long Lake Estates
Born in 1977 in the United Kingdom, Chisholm currently lives and works in London.
Borrowing Old Master techniques, Ross Chisholm recreates a range of images, from 18th-century British society portraits and genre scenes to 1970s vacation snapshots sourced from images found at flea markets.
Chisholm’s new body of work continues his interest in portrait/abstraction, with the original image being less visible than in previous work, and using 18th century society portraits by Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney and Joshua Reynolds. Each portrait was first executed as a small loose/abstract copy that could be interpreted as an initial experience. Taking this as his starting point, he then executed a large-scale, expansively painted interpretation of what he had observed and experienced.
