Ori Gersht is a contemporary Israeli photographer and video artist born in Tel Aviv in 1967. His work hinges heavily on historical reference used as metaphors for contemporary life, with series spanning such themes as Dutch still life painting, romantic landscapes, and Nazi-occupied territory escape routes in the Pyrenees. Gersht is perhaps best known for his work with slow-motion capture, wherein he produces images and video portraying fruits, flowers, and other material fracturing when stuck with high velocity gunfire.

Solo exhibitions include

  • the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (2009)

  • Tel Aviv Museum (2012 and 2015)

  • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2012)

  • Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv (2013)

  • Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio (2014)

  • Museum Kurhaus Kleve, Germany (2015)

Ori Gersht's photos and videos startle, seduce, and sometimes explode. Gersht's work looks like an 18th-century Dutch painting by Jan van Huysum until a faint mist appears and suddenly petals and glass dance through the air.
