Matthias Bitzer was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1975 and now lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Bitzer’s work overlaps divergent images and abstract forms. The themes of history and identity are central to his work, with the lives of historical figures as the main inspiration for reflection. Taking a new perspective on classical modernism, the artist combines portraits and geometric constructions and often takes recourse to the formal language, stories, and intellectual historical contexts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
