Born in 1955 in Barcelona, Jaume Plensa has lived and worked around the world, currently splitting time between Paris and Barcelona.
Celebrated internationally for his public works, Plensa is known for his poetic approach to sculpture. He produces works of art that evoke silence and inward reflection. Using a wide range of materials including steel, cast iron, resin, paraffin wax, glass, light, water, and sound, Plensa lends physical weight and volume to components of the human condition and the ephemeral.
Since 1993, Plensa has created a multitude of self-portraits, each varying in scale, material, and form, but each reflecting his enduring love of the written word. This sculpture is unusual in that the artist created the self-portrait in bronze but then allows the owner to collaborate with him by choosing the tree to be planted and the dirt to nourish it.
Plensa is highly active in projects in public spaces. His celebrated works can be seen at Bonaventure Gateway, Montreal, Canada; Millennium Park, Illinois; Olympic Sculpture Park, Washington; Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York; and Pérez Art Museum Miami, Florida; among many other sites worldwide.
