Fiona Rae was born in Hong Kong in 1963 and also lived in Indonesia before moving to England in 1970 where she currently lives and works.
Rae’s work may seem both humorous and serious, as she critiques contemporary society and the role technology plays within it. Her paintings and drawings are seemingly abstract, however, upon closer inspection, they are purposely rendered depictions and representations of people and things. In these two drawings, Rae juxtaposes clean lines with muddy and sloppy smudges. When we look closely at the drawings, we can see figures standing in the center that are cartoonish in style. This harsh yet comical representation of people is a direct critique on contemporary lifestyle.
Over the last 25 years, Rae’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions in museums, public institutions and galleries worldwide.
Selected solo exhibitions include
Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Paris, France (2009)
