Carol Bove was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1971 and was raised in Berkeley, California. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Bove is known for her simple yet intricate sculpture and assemblages of found and made objects, carefully arranged on pedestals, platforms, or against walls. Using a wide range of materials, including books, driftwood, peacock feathers, metal, Bove’s works resist categorization.

Here are two very different works by the same artist. One, an assemblage of colorful peacock feathers on canvas is a source material Bove has used before. The other is a white, powder-coated steel tubular sculpture reminiscent of Minimalist sculpture of the 1960’s and 70’s. The artist refers to these new coiled, white sculptures as “glyphs” – which refers to a symbol (as a curved arrow on a road sign) that conveys information nonverbally. This pristine, painted steel sculpture is aptly titled “Temperance”, which is defined as moderation or self-restraint.
