Andrew Laumann
Unititled (Lennox), 2015
Sagapanack
Andrew Laumann was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1987 where he still lives and works. A self-taught artist, he has been involved in the Baltimore art and music scene for more than ten years. When not making fine art, Laumann is the frontman of the explosive noise rock band Dope Body.
Laumann’s paintings replicate paper detritus often found on city streets or along the walls of bridges and buildings where advertisers put up posters and graffiti is written. The paintings are made by layering sheets of colored paper with an adhesive and then tearing parts off. These textured compositions are difficult to capture with a camera, and straight- on installation images don’t quite do them justice. A few of his works are completely painted over with a semi-reflective silver wash, alluding to when city anti-graffiti efforts cover spray paint with rectangles of paint.
