Great Jones Alley

Alex Hubbard was born in 1975 and is now based in New York and Los Angeles.  He works primarily in painting and video, exploring composition, volume, and color in unique ways.  “You can plan the best painting and it might be terrible, but if you’re in the right mood and in the right space you can make something in 20 minutes that turns out so much better,” he has said.

In his painting practice, the artist brings together a range of industrial materials, such as resin, urethane, oil, and wax, using traditional techniques to pour, pull and drip his media across the canvas, sometimes with the assistance of a squeegee. Fields of color underlaid with industrial prints are interrupted with richly pooled, dripped and poured resin and oil paint. Working with fast- drying materials, Hubbard embraces chance happenings, revealing the autonomy of his chosen media. Nonetheless, compositional spontaneity is achieved through meticulous layering that results in unexpected formal and chemical combinations. His latest process involves UV printing technology that unites the languages of abstraction and figuration in a single canvas via underlying prints of machinery and everyday items.
